Hades plays an important part in The Helm of Darkness, especially since the Helm of Darkness is one of Hades’s symbols and main objects of power. Theseus picked Helen, and Pirithous picked Persephone, Hades’s wife and Queen of the Underworld. Pirithous and Theseus decided they both wanted to marry daughters of Zeus. A few of his symbols include the Helm of Darkness, a helmet that clothed the wearer with complete invisibility, and Cerberus, a giant three-headed dog tasked with guarding the gates of the underworld so that the souls there could not escape.
